Grants For Students Studying Careers In Healthcare
(June 30, 2010 - Rockville Centre, NY) The Council of Leagues of Mercy Medical Center has presented its annual Sister Mary Grace Memorial Scholarships, providing one-time grants for students in financial need who are studying careers in healthcare.
The scholarships, which range from $500 to $1,000, are awarded in memory of Sister Mary Grace, who served as Moderator of the Leagues for many years and encouraged individuals to pursue compassionate service to the sick.
The recipients for 2010 are:
- Loretta Cook of Northport, whose grant award will ease part of the financial strains of her full-time attendance at the Mercy Medical Center School of Radiography while also holding down a full-time job at a specialty supermarket.
- Melissa Delgaudo of Shirley, a single mother of a two-year-old son, who attends the Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare while also employed part-time as a home and community support worker for an agency that provides long-term rehabilitation to people who have suffered traumatic brain injuries.
- Erica Forthman, a graduating senior at Wantagh High School who will be attending Molly College in the fall in pursuit of a career in nursing.
- Osalenne Metellus of Rockaway Beach, a single parent of a 13-year-old daughter, who works as a home health aide while studying nursing at Union County College in Elizabeth, NJ.
- Denyse Ramierz of Elmont, an accomplished student and athlete at Sewanhaka High School, who both works part-time and volunteers in community services, and aspires to a career in nursing.
- Jacqueline Roman of Woodhaven, a mother of six-year-old twins, who teaches Sunday School and volunteers in her Parish Church and is planning to advance her studies beyond the Bachelor of Science degree that she holds in biology, in pursuit of a career as a Registered Nurse.
- Anneka Smith of Elmont, a graduating senior at Sewanhaka High School who will be attending the New York Institute of Technology to study nursing.
- The Rockville Centre/Lakeview Community Action Program, for its scholarship program supporting high school students going on to college.
